چکیده

Seabed-structure interactions are responsible for the burial of heavy objects, such as mines, pipelines, concrete breakwaters, platforms, debris, and other objects on the seafloor. In low shear strength muds, these objects are known to bury at impact or to sink into the sediment if the buoyant weight of the object exceeds the bearing capacity of the seafloor. In higher energy sandy sediments, burial by scour and fill, momentary or cyclic wave-induced liquefaction, and seabed morphological changes (e.g., transverse bedform migration, changes in shore-rise and bar-berm conditions, sediment deposition) is common. Using a field experimental approach, NRL will test and evaluate physics-based mine burial processes and models in order to provide the US Navy with an accurate, real-time mine burial prediction capability.

Mine Burial Induced by Local Scour and Sandwaves

The main objective of this effort has been the direct observation and monitoring of the burial process of finite-length cylinders (model mines) induced by the combined action of waves, currents and pure oscillatory flows. The experimental conditions have made it possible to observe the burial process due to both local scour around the mines as well as the passage of large sandwaves. These rathe...

The Role of Variability in Mine Burial Prediction

The ultimate long-term goal of the ONR Mine Burial Prediction (MBP) program is the development of mine burial probability models that incorporate dynamic coupled processes, seafloor material properties, and different mine types. A second major thrust is on short-term applied research that will provide Fleet Aids for the operational Navy. The short-term effort will provide the operational Navy w...

Reformulation of Mine Scour Equations Using Observations from MBP Field Sites

A major goal of the ONR Mine Burial Prediction (MBP) Program is to provide the operational Navy simple models for predicting subsequent mine burial by scour which work with a known and useful degree of accuracy in regions of strategic interest, defined initially as sandy inner shelves dominated by waves. In order to be useful under real world conditions, such models must be reasonably accurate ...

Transition of Bayesian Expert System Model for Mine Burial to NAVO

This work supports mine burial prediction by the US Navy by transitioning the capabilities provided by state-of-the-art, high-resolution process models to Naval operations. These models are synthesized by a statistical prediction tool (the Mine Burial Expert System—MBESM), which relates uncertainty in model input to uncertainty in the predicted mine burial. This work will produce more detailed ...

Mine Impact Burial Prediction From One to Three Dimensions

The Navy’s mine impact burial prediction model creates a time history of a cylindrical or a noncylindrical mine as it falls through air, water, and sediment. The output of the model is the predicted mine trajectory in air and water columns, burial depth/orientation in sediment, as well as height, area, and volume protruding. Model inputs consist of parameters of environment, mine characteristic...
